ANNOUNCEMENTS AND UPCOMING EVENTS

This month in the Guidance Office
Counselors are currently meeting individually with sophomores to review their Pre-ACT results, and returning PSAT score reports to sophomores and juniors who took the test. We are also preparing schedules for second semester. Students can access their second semester schedules online through their Campus Portal accounts. If there are errors, students should see their school counselor as soon as possible to make corrections. In February, we will begin the registration process for next year. We will be presenting to all students in their classes about options for next year and requirements for graduation. We are running students support groups based on the information gathered in our needs assessment; please let us know if you do not want your child to participate in a group.

  • Registration for 2018 - 2019:  The registration process for the 2018-19 school year will start in February. School counselors are going to Friendly Hills and Heritage to explain course offerings and begin the registration process with incoming 9th graders February 9th and 12th. We will then have our Registration Night on February 12th at 6pm for parents of incoming 9th graders. Current Sibley students will also start the registration process in February.
  • Dollars for Scholars: Applications for Henry Sibley Dollars for Scholars scholarships will be accepted February 8-26. These scholarships are for the graduating class of 2018. All Henry Sibley graduating seniros are eligible to apply. Last year, 160 scholarships were awarded to Henry Sibley graduates totaling over $104,000. Check the Sibley website for a link to the application, or begin your application by clicking here
  • Junior Meeting: February 8th there will be a meeting with all juniors regarding registration and new course opportunities.
  • 2018 ACT April 24th: All juniors will take the ACT plus Writing on April 24th. This is now a required test for juniors, and can be used as an official test score for college admissions. Students do not need to register or pay for this test.
  • ACT or SAT score for college applications - If your child did not list the colleges they are applying to as a recipient of their scores when they took the test, they may need to request an official score to be sent directly from ACT/SAT. If you have additional questions, please see your child's counselor for assistance.
  •  College Visits to Sibley: Admission representatives from various colleges come to Sibley throughout the year to meet with interested students. Students can check the calendar outside of the guidance office, the clipboard inside the guidance office, our counseling webpage, or log on to Naviance to see which colleges are visiting and sign up to meet the college reps. This is a great opportunity to connect and learn more.
  • College Applications: Counselors are working with seniors to complete their college applications and submit required documents. If the college requests letters of recommendation as part of the application, students should be sure to ask teachers early. Information about college applications procedure and ordering transcripts through Naviance can be found at www.sibley.isd197.org/services/guidance. Please see your child's counselor for assistance.
  • Financial Aid Changes: Students graduating in 2018 are able to file a 2018-19 FAFSA - the Free Application for Federal Student Aid - as of October 1, 2017, rather than beginning on January 1, 2018. The earlier submission date is a permanent change that began in 2016, enabling students to complete the submit a FAFSA as early as October 1 every year. This fall's FAFSA, submitted for students attending college in the 2018-19 school year (including this year's graduating seniors), will use income and tax information from 2016.
