The following letter was mailed and emailed to families with students currently in grades 9-12.

As part of the District’s comprehensive technology plan, called “EmPowerED”, over the next several years we will integrate technology into our classrooms that will allow teachers to personalize learning and prepare our students for college and/or careers in the 21st century. The district-wide EmPowerED initiative has three key parts; ensure high-quality professional development for staff, transform curriculum and instruction, and implement devices for students. The timeline and approach in these areas will vary by school and grade.

As we told you about last spring, Henry Sibley High School has begun its shift to a digital learning environment (electronic textbooks, web-based curriculum, a robust WIFI network, etc.) which has created the need for students to use a device in and outside of school to access course content, complete homework, collaborate and communicate with classmates, conduct research and more.

Please know this does not mean that students will use a computer for the entire period of each class throughout their day. Technology will be used when appropriate and teachers will continue to also use traditional instructional methods and ask students to complete assignments or projects using tools other than a computer.

All students, regardless of their financial circumstances, will have two options:
1. Use a school-owned device – Students will be provided with a computing device to use throughout the year. The device will be assigned specifically to the student who will need to bring it to school each day.  
2. Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) – Students/families bring a device to school that they currently own or purchase that meets the minimum requirements to use during the year in class each day. 

If you need to make a change to your Student Device Form, please call 651-403-7005. Additional forms are available in the Henry Sibley Main Office or online. Students purchasing their own device may begin bringing it to school at any time. All students will be required to bring their device (school owned or personally owned) each day starting November 16, the start of Quarter 2.

School devices will be a mix of new, currently owned and recertified laptops, Chromebooks and Macbooks. Devices will be distributed to students by grade throughout the month of October to ensure all devices are issued by Quarter 2.

Seniors - October 5, 6 and 7
Juniors - October 8, 9 and 12
Sophomores - October 13, 14 and 19
Freshmen - October 20, 21 and 22 

Students must schedule an appointment to pick up their device before school, during lunches and after school. A link to an appointment sign-up form has been sent to each student’s school email address, if they have completed a student device form. 

Students who stay after school to pick up their device should plan to take the academic bus (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays) or arrange for transportation home. Parents and guardians are welcome to attend the device distribution appointment, but it is not required. Regardless, all parents and guardians are encouraged to review the information sent home with the device.
